После того, как настроил VPN, сразу поставил alsa, xorg и проприетарные драйвера ATi (9.2).
После команды xinit появляется xterm и система перестает реагировать на нажатия клавиш, после startx -- несколько окон и тоже никакой реакции на нажатия.
Подскажите, в чем может быть дело?

та же проблема на Nvidia 8600, еще пробовал настроить под vmware., но все равно та же ситуация

Начиная с версии HAL 0.5.10 настройки клавиатуры в xorg.conf игнорируются. Для настройки используйте средства самого HAL. Создайте файл /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi такого содержания:

Пожалуй, уместнее всего задать вопрос в этой теме. Поставил свежий Arch Linux (i686), никак не заводится звук (ALSA). Пробовал делать alsaconf (и исправлять ручками последствия его кривой работы, точнее, неприспособленности к Arch Linux), пробовал блокировать загрузку некоторых модулей, что помогало многим, - безрезультатно. В общем-то, модули загружены правильные.

Подниму тему. По всей видимости, в описанной выше виновато ядро 2.6.32 - в нем работу звука для моей карточки поломали, похоже (после обновления ядра в Fedora звук пропал; вывод напрашивается; кстати, видел где-то описание похожего бага и для Ubuntu).

Попытка подсунуть системе самостоятельно скомпилированное ядро 2.6.31.12 с kernel.org приводит почему-то к плачевным последствиям - стартовые скрипты выполняются как попало, со сбоями, GDM не запускается, в логах ничего определенного не нашел. Есть какие-нибудь идеи, куда копать и в чем может быть дело? Или ну его к лешему, этот Arch Linux?

Да, конкретно сейчас я сижу на Fedora со старым ядром, для диагностических целей, если нужно, думаю, достаточно просто поставить новое, заводить снова Arch мне лениво.

Пожалуй, все-таки это оффтопик для темы по Arch Linux; может, перейти в какую-нибудь другую или даже вынести в отдельную?

Кстати, на федоре даже удобнее диагностировать: можно грузить работающий и неработающий вариант (разные ядра, как легко заметить) и наблюдать разницу.

Думаю, да, можно создать более общую тему (не привязывать к Arch), знающих людей может появиться больше. Сам же вряд ли смогу помочь, знаний пока не так много. Полгода просидел на Кубунте, сейчас думаю перейти на Арч.

Скажу, что один мой знакомый решал похожую проблему запрещением загрузки модуля именно в initrd. Не знаю, как это может помочь. Можно, как вы уже говорили, попробовать собрать 2.6.31 ядро. Вот официальная дока:

Или, допустим, можно установиться с одного из последних дисков, где еще 31 ядро идет и запретить его обновление. Не знаю, стоит ли игра свеч

Скорее писать в багзиллу или искать лучше. Уж очень тянет именно на глюк ядра, причем упоминания аналогичных встречались.

Хм... Насколько я понимаю, весь смысл initrd в том, чтобы модули ядра для какого-нибудь хитрого SATA или RAID доставить, иначе замкнутый круг: модули на диске, и чтобы их прочесть, нужны эти же самые модули. При чем тут ALSA-то? Или о чем речь?

Так я же вроде вполне однозначно написал, что собрал ядро 2.6.31.12 с kernel.org. Вручную, классическим методом. Безо всякого initrd, кстати, вообще, потому что почти монолитное. Была у меня, кстати, идея, что в этом и загвоздка - загрузочные скрипты Arch такого не воспринимают, им обязательно initrd подавай, но это, вообще говоря, ерунда полная.

Оно вроде достаточно давно уже 32, нет? Я, кстати, искал во всяких репозиториях, где, бывает, можно найти предыдущие версии пакетов, но увы, не для ядра. Ну и потом: с фирменным kernel26-lts загрузиться в графическом режиме мне также не удалось, хотя тут-то ладно, оно все-таки на стоящий где-то в углу сервер рассчитано.

Коли не секрет, а какие мотивы перехода? Попробовать что-то новое, или же в Kubuntu что-то замучало, какие-нибудь там тормоза или глюки?

Нет, всё было хорошо. Именно Кубунту меня притянула к Линуксу и, в частности к КДЕ. А на Арч хочу, т.к. он мне очень понравился в плане устройства, его технической простотой. В Кубунту хоть все и работает как надо, но не понимаешь как, т.к. все за тебя понапичкано и обработанно напильником. Хочется разобраться самому. Посижу, поразбираюсь. Дальше видно будет

А что инструкции? Ссылку ту я видел, но она скорее полезна, если нужно самому пакет изготовить, а вообще, make menuconfig, потом make, make install и make modules_install никто не отменял.
