Jazz saxophonist and composer Dayna Stephens is an adept post-bop-influenced musician who has worked with a bevy of heavy-hitting jazz artists. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Stephens attended both the Berklee School of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz before embarking on his professional career. He has performed and recorded with such artists as Phil Ranelin, Taylor Eigsti, Sachal Vasandani, Gerald Clayton, and Gretchen Parlato, among others. As a leader, he debuted in 2007 with The Timeless Now and followed up with 2012's Today Is Tomorrow. In 2013, Stephens released two albums, That Nepenthetic Place and I'll Take My Chances.

Be careful when you pick up Ron Brown's Discovery Records' debut From My Eyes Only that you don't mistake it for something from the George Howard catalog. From his shaved head to the cool way he weaves punchy sax licks around slick, easy urban grooves, Brown reminds one of the man whose success helped create an audience for this type of easygoing jazz/funk. Ironically enough, however, for a player who focuses on the soprano, Brown's hardest hitting moments come on uptempo throw downs like "Why" and the down-home swing of "It's a Texas Thing," where he's blowing hot and heavy on the tenor. While by the numbers covers of recent soul hits "You Are Not Alone" and "Why Does It Hurt So Bad" may attract radio interest, too much attention to these would take away from the more playful moments which allow Brown to stretch out and challenge the limitations of the format. Most notable of these involve pals Patrice Rushen and Bobby Lyle, who solo as if they are on a live, straight-ahead date. More of this type of energy from Brown himself would have made this an even more impressive first time at the plate.

A past student of Bancroft's School, Beal High School and the University of Kent, Kent Business School in Canterbury, England. Her Undergraduate Master's Dissertation was on "Combining SSM (Soft systems methodology) and DESM (Discrete event simulation) in an Athletics Club." She also fronted a TV talk show on a Sky Channel and appeared in inspirational idents for BET network.(Black Entertainment Television)

Silje Nergaard is an award-winning Norwegian jazz-pop singer/songwriter who peaked in popularity after the turn of the century with the chart-topping albums At First Light (2001) and Nightwatch (2003). Born on June 19, 1966, in Steinkjer, Norway, she cites influences that include Al Jarreau and Joni Mitchell. As a teenager she became something of a national sensation when she joined an impromptu jam session at the 1983 Molde Internasjonal Jazz Festival. In 1984 she made her solo recording debut with a 7" single, "One of These Mornings"/"My Funny Valentine," released on PolyGram. Several years later she signed a recording deal with Lifetime Records and made her full-length album debut with Tell Me Where You're Going (1990), the first of three English-language jazz-pop albums produced and co-written by Richard Niles. The highlights of these early albums, the others being Silje (1991) and Cow on the Highway (1995), were later compiled on the best-of collection The Lifetime Years (2005). After parting ways with Lifetime Records, Nergaard released a couple Norwegian-language albums on the label Kirkelig Kulturverksted: Brevet (1995) and Hjemmefra (1996). Upon signing a major-label recording deal with Universal Music, Nergaard broke through to mainstream success in 2000 with Port of Call, a full-length English-language effort comprised largely of cover material. Port of Call was a Top Ten hit on the Norwegian albums chart and set the stage for her chart-topping follow-up albums, At First Light (2001) and Nightwatch (2003). Like Port of Call, these two albums feature a quartet comprised of Tord Gustavsen (piano, Rhodes), Harald Johnsen (acoustic bass), and Jarle Vespestad (drums), in addition to Nergaard (vocals). Almost entirely self-composed, Nightwatch was especially successful, earning Nergaard a Spellemannprisen award for Musician of the Year. In the wake of this success, Be Still My Heart: The Essential (2005), a best-of collection also featuring some new material, was released, along with the aforementioned Lifetime compilation. Subsequent albums Darkness out of Blue (2007) and A Thousand True Stories (2009), both Top Five hits, feature an expanded band and arrangements by Vince Mendoza.

Released in 1995, In the Hand of the Inevitable is the most curious of all of the James Taylor Quartet's recordings. After helping to usher in the acid jazz movement on recordings like 1987's Money Spyder, with its spy/noir-ish soundtrack feel equally influenced by Lalo Schifrin and the Ventures, and the masterpiece that is the band's 1989 effort, Get Organized (their first to employ vocals — in a truly soulful jazz scat style), they moved to the center, becoming more a house music soundtrack act with diva-like vocals (sometimes male-centric as well with Noel McCoy watering down the earlier gains they'd made musically). In the Hand of the Inevitable, issued stateside by Hollywood's Acid Jazz imprint, is a transition album. In its native U.K., this set is regarded as a classic meld of the band's earlier style and the more soul and house approach of the immediately preceding albums, Supernatural Feeling (1993) and Do Your Own Thing (1991). Here, it's regarded as a bit more ho-hum, generic safe-stepping period album. It's neither. In the Hand of the Inevitable is another singular moment for the JTQ, where the integration of modern British soul and the big-beat intensity of being a jazz group began to form a new identity for the band, which was equally at home in a sweaty club or a concert hall. In fact, if this set owes to anything, it's a deep nod to Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. Check the funky, horn-driven riffing on "3 Mile Island," the upscale, jazzed-up soul in "Keep on Moving," and the burning organ acid boil on the closing title track for evidence of Auger's lineage firmly imprinted on these cuts' DNA. On the other hand, the mod, wild-style rave-up organ groove — patented in the sound lab by one Georgie Fame — is readily apparent in the band's killer reading of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." But then there is the house-soul model too, evidenced by the beautiful vocal interplay of "Love Will Keep Us Together" (no, not the Captain & Tennille hit) as well as Gary Crockett's euphoric, jazzed-up anthem "Sounds of Freedom." If In the Hand of the Inevitable sounds like anything, it sounds like a band whose members have so many possibilities at hand that they can't focus on any one for too long, making for a thoroughly exhilarating listen.

Het Duitse kwintet Subjam is mij volledig onbekend. Dit zou overigens hun debuutalbum zijn. De band bestaat uit een gitarist, een bassist, een drummer, een keyboardspeler en een saxofonist. Er is op het Internet over hen bijna niks te vinden. Ze componeerden alle tracks en brengen instrumentale jazzfunk uit de jaren ’80. Ik kan het wel appreciëren, ook al is er wat improvisatie aanwezig. De band brengt op dit studioalbum de energie van hun liveoptredens. Na de energieke opener ‘Warm Up’ gaat ‘Honeymoon” verder op dezelfde weg. En dat geldt eigenlijk voor alle andere tracks ook. Enkel afsluiter ‘Lady Palmin’ is wat zachter. Voor wie houdt van jammende jazzfunk.

A former Los Angeles saxophone studio musician, Crutcher performed with pop stars like Lionel Richie and the Commodores before moving to Santa Fe, NM, and developing his own introspective style of music. The classical tradition meets the spontaneity of jazz through the virtuosic playing of Brazil-born and New York-based pianist Eliane Elias. A former member of jazz ensemble Steps Ahead, Elias has continued to explore two distinct musical streams through her solo recordings and her performances since the mid-'80s. In 1993, she became one of the few artists to release jazz and classical albums simultaneously. In a review of a concert in her homeland, Brazil magazine praised Elias for "her dazzling right-hand runs, executed often at frightening speeds. Her command of the keyboard was total. Her harmonic sensibility caused a sense of wonderment."

Elias may have inherited at least some of her musical talents from her mother, Lucy, a classical pianist who often played jazz records in the family home. After studying for six years at the Free Center of Music Apprenticeship in São Paulo, she continued to study classical technique with Amilton Godoy and Amaral Vieira. By her teens, Elias was composing her own pieces and performing in jazz clubs. While touring in Europe in 1981, she met jazz bassist Eddie Gomez and was encouraged to travel to New York. Arriving in the Big Apple the following year, she studied privately with Olegna Fuschi at the Juilliard School of Music. Elias' professional career received a boost when she was invited to join Steps Ahead, a jazz "supergroup" featuring Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Mike Manieri, and Eddie Gomez. She recorded one album with the group — Steps Ahead — in 1983. Shortly after leaving Steps Ahead, Elias began collaborating with trumpet player Randy Brecker, whom she subsequently married but later divorced. Their sole duo album, released in 1985, was named after their daughter Amanda. The following year, Elias launched her career as a bandleader. Since then, she's alternated tours with two different trios, one featuring drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gomez and the other featuring drummer Erskine and her current husband, bassist Marc Johnson. Elias has also performed with a third trio, featuring Johnson on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on drums.

She signed with Blue Note in 1989, and released her debut for the label, So Far So Close, the same year with a slew of guests. While most of her recordings have been instrumental, Elias introduced her soft but coarse vocals on her 1990 album Eliane Elias Plays Jobim, and has employed vocals on occasion ever since. Her 1995 album Solos and Duets featured a brilliantly executed duet with Herbie Hancock. In addition to working periodically with Toots Thielemans' Brasil Project, Elias has served as musical director for Gilberto Gil's group. While she continued to record for the rest of the '90s, it was 2000's Impulsive! that proved one of the largest surprises in her career as she collaborated with conductor and arranger Bob Brookmeyer leading the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra. In 2002 she left Blue Note for RCA's Bluebird label, where she debuted with Kissed by Nature, a primarily vocal album, and followed it up with the lovely Dreamer in 2004. Elias released Around the City in 2006, a collection of primarily vocal tracks that moved ever further into pop territory, covering music by Santana, Bob Marley, and even Beck. It was her final album for Bluebird.

She returned to Blue Note for 2007's Something for You: Elaine Elias Sings & Plays Bill Evans, fronting a trio with Johnson (who played with Evans) and drummer Joey Baron. In 2009, she issued what many have argued is her finest recording, Bossa Nova Stories, fully engaging her Brazilian heritage in bossa and samba and illustrating her singular jazz instincts as a pianist. In 2010, Savoy Records issued Timeless Eliane Elias, a compilation of tracks culled from her mid-'80s recordings Illusions and Cross Currents. In late 2010, Elias signed with Concord; in the late spring of 2011 she released Light My Fire, her debut set on the label. A year later, Elias paired with bassist Marc Johnson for the instrumental ECM date, Swept Away. In 2013, Elias paid homage to trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker with I Thought About You: A Tribute to Chet Baker.
