SuSE Linux 8.2 LiveEval
=======================
************************************************** ***************************
- boot/hardware problems
If the linux kernel does not boot or there are other hardware related
problems, it could be caused by the new ACPI code. Just turn it off
using
acpi=off
at the boot prompt and try again. For more information about ACPI and
SuSE Linux 8.2, see:
http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/81_acpi.html
- IDE RAID controller
Do not use SuSE Linux 8.2 LiveEval on systems with a Promise IDE RAID
controller. Linux has difficulties to recognize your Windows RAID setup.
As long as you're using the Promise controller as a normal (UDMA) IDE
controller, there are no problems, however.

To use the SuSE Linux 8.2 LiveEval CD insert it into your CD-ROM drive and
boot from it.
The installation program will look for free space on your first hard
drive ('C:') and create these files:
suselive.swp:a swap file; only if you have less than
about 160MB main memory
suselive.usr:this will be your /home directory
suselive.820:the current configuration
If the installation program does'nt find enough free disk space your
configuration will not be saved. This means, you'll have to go through the
setup procedure every time you boot this CD.
Boot floppy
-----------
Some older/defective BIOSes have problems booting from a CD-ROM drive or do
not support it at all. In this case a BIOS update might help. Alternatively
you can create a LiveEval floppy and boot from it. But this works only, if
your computer has an IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM drive.
To make a LiveEval floppy, follow these steps:
- if you're working with Linux, mount the LiveEval CD, put a formatted
floppy disk into your floppy drive, and run
dd if=boot/bootdisk of=/dev/fd0
- if you're working with DOS/Windows, use the rawrite tool
(boot/rawrite.exe on this LiveEval CD) to create the floppy
Note that you will need modules disk 1, too. Create it with
dd if=boot/modules1 of=/dev/fd0
or use rawrite.exe.
NVIDIA and 3D hardware acceleration
-----------------------------------
As you cannot update any RPM, it is not possible to install the 3D
hardware accelerated X server from NVIDIA's website using this
LiveEval CD.
Have a lot of fun...
