Help with WinXP!!!

So, situation is like that: I've WinXP Pro SP1. It's worked normally for a long time. But one day after selecting OS in NTLoader, it wrote: "File \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missed or corrupted".

Hmm... I've loaded Linux and replaced file \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM with \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.SAV.

But after that when WinXP loaded (before LogOn screen) it have tried to install WinXP again...

I've replaced file \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM with \WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM. But no result - some error appears when WinXP loaded (before LogOn screen)...

What can I do?! How to repair WinXP without re-install it?

Start the computer and then press the F8 key when Windows begins to start. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
Use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If a boot menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER. Windows XP restores the computer to the most recent restore point.
Never(!!) do anything with XP manually!!! without standard utilities.

Of course, I've tried to do it. And Safe Mode too. But no result... File \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missed or corrupted

By the way, please, translate my question in Russian to other visitors of forum. I understand Russian (I'm from here )) But I can't to set up locale in rh73 (because I'm newbie in Linux I don't like translit, so I write in English.

Скорее всего, начались проблемы с диском. Как систему восстановишь, сразу его проверь хорошенько.
Как решить проблему, возмржные варианты :

I have had the same problem. Most likely (all my experience says that) the file system (your XP resides at) is damaged. Try to chkdsk it in another XP system (just attach the hard drive with damaged system to another computer with XP installed and "chkdsk /f" the partition with your XP system).

! Восстанвил WinXP, хотя и несколько коряво.

Кстати, чем можно проверить hdd на bad'ы? chkdsk /R говорит, что все нормально.

Ему вообще-то можно верить, но если есть сомнения в диске, то у всех производителей есть своя утилита для сертификации. Это свободно доступно.
Кстати. а твой диск NTFS отформатирован или FAT32 ?
