http://www.bigblackglasses.com/article.aspx?Article=336 I discovered this earlier today at work: If you slipstream Service Pack 4 into a Windows 2000 Installation Source (network share, CD-ROM, birthday cake, however you like it), any OS installed from that source will be lacking the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. For reference, article Q820101 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base describes this.
As an added bonus, it appears that you can't install any JVM with a build greater than (and including) 3805 on Windows 2000 SP4. Yay!
So you want to do it anyway, huh? Ok, here's how I did it:
Enable compatibility mode for Windows 2000. You can do this by clicking Start, Run, and typing REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\APPPATCH\SLAYERUI.DLL. Click OK, and reboot your computer. There ya go.
Obtain an installer for a JVM with a build number less than 3809. For your convenience, 3805 is available here.
Create a shortcut to the JVM Installer. Right click on it, and choose properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Enable the Windows NT4 SP5 Compatibility Layer. Click Apply/OK.
Double click on the modified icon to install the JVM. It will progress through the installation, but will display an error at the end. Click OK to get past it, and restart your computer.
That should do it. Once you've restarted your computer, Java applets should be working in IE, so you'll be able to play solitaire at Yahoo again... WooHoo!
One other thing I should mention. I don't know what the error being specified at the end of the installation is complaining about, but it doesn't seem to be too damaging. If you visit WindowsUpdate after you install the JVM, there will be an update (to 3810) that will need to be installed. It installs fine - once again indicating that there are no real problems.
If anyone should happen to find a problem, however, please feel free to post it here, or contact me.
Happy JVMing... because Java's so cool...
