Release Candidate
We're getting closer to the final version of Mandrake Linux 9.0. This Release Candidate offers a first opportunity to evaluate all the job done during the Beta stages. Your participation is highly appreciated.
The development team wish beta-testers to focus on the following applications:
GNOME2, KDE3, OpenOffice: These stellar applications have undergone many improvements, they deserve a new evaluation.
Dynamic Desktop: When plugging-in a peripheral device, Dynamic Desktop enables the automatic display of a shortcut easing the launch of an associated application in KDE or GNOME. Dynamic Desktop is now functional for USB storage. Please give it a try.
Drakconf: We would like to obtain your feedback on the new ergonomics and look.
Mozilla 1.1, finally why wouldn't you play with the latest Mozilla ? According to the release notes, Mozilla 1.1 offers improved application and layout performance, stability, Web site compatibility, CSS, DOM and HTML standards support.
The installation changelog is available here. You can also browse the package-oriented changelog.
Known issues:
- The message "Unresolved symbol ov11" may appear during the computing of kernel modules dependencies. This will be fixed thanks to a new kernel upload.
- Users who have a cd burner will experience difficulties when launching Drakconf. The problem is fixed in drakconf version 9.0-0.17mdk.
- Texts (advertisement) may overlap during installation. This will be fixed soon.
- A bad file list is sometimes copied at the end of the installation, preventing Urpmi and RpmDrake from finding packages. This issue is under investigation.
How to report bugs for Beta 9.0?
We'd appreciate feedback from the largest number of Beta testers, so there
are a number of ways to help make sure Mandrake Linux 9.0 is the best release
ever:
1) If you enjoy getting "hands-on" and are quite good with Linux (with
several years of experience), the best bet is for you to subscribe to the
Cooker mailing list so you can directly communicate with the MandrakeSoft
developers.
2) If you don't have time to get deeply involved but have a good level of
Linux knowledge, the best bet is to ask for a BugZilla account for posting
bug reports. To obtain a BugZilla account, send an email to
'request@qa.linux-mandrake.com' with "canpostabug" in the body of your
message. Note: you must first create a BugZilla account if you do not have
one yet.
3) If you are quite new to this whole Linux/UNIX(TM) thing, you can report
bugs by submitting them to MandrakeExpert -- just cite 'Mandrake Linux 9.0
beta1' as the product version.

3.3 Can I write to an NTFS Volume, too?
NO.
There are two drivers, currently. The original driver, in 2.4 has some write code in it, but it is extremely dangerous to use it. The possibility of destroying your filesystem is very high.
The new driver, introduced in 2.5.11, has no write code at all. This may sound like a backwards step, but it was necessary to rewrite the driver in order to make the future coding simpler and more solid.
Adding write support will take a long time. NTFS is built like a database. Any changes you make, necessitate making changes in many places, for consistancy. Make a mistake and the filesystem will be damaged, make too many mistakes and the filesystem will be destroyed. Also, the current developers are only working on NTFS as a hobby, during their free time. If you'd like to help, please email me: webmaster@flatcap.org.
ALT Linux Junior 2.0
Perl
