A smooth jazz studio supergroup led by saxophonist Kim Waters, Streetwize feature a roster including singer Maysa Leak and guitarist Ken Navarro. The idea of collaboration is nothing new to jazz — smooth or otherwise — the twist here is that Streetwize perform contemporary rap and R&B radio hits. Their first album, Streetwize: Smooth Urban Jazz, was released by Shanachie in 2002 and featured versions of Mystikal's "Shake It Fast," Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat," and D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar." A second album, Work It, appeared the next year with Kim Waters and company polishing the edges off tracks made popular by Missy Elliott, Erykah Badu, and Jennifer Lopez. In 2004, Streetwize delivered the sultry Slow Jamz featuring the Isley Brothers tributes "Don't Say Goodnight" and "Between the Sheets." Two years later, the band returned with Does Dre which included songs associate with rapper Dr. Dre such as Eminem's "My Name Is," Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice," and "Nuthin' But a G Thang." The band continued in the slow jam cover song vein with 2007's Sexy Love, 2008's Streetwize Does Mary J Blige, and 2009's Put U to Bed. In 2012, Streetwize released its eighth studio album, Feelin' Sexy, featuring covers of songs by Robin Thicke, R. Kelly, Frank Ocean, and others. Body Party followed in 2013 with versions of Ciara's song of the same title, Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home," and Tamar Braxton's "The One." ~ Wade Kergan & Matt Collar, Rovi

09. Dreaming's Out of Season
10. Stand Up (feat. Howard Hewett)
On his seventh album for Shanachie, singer and songwriter Phil Perry and longtime producer Chip Davis lay out a set of excellent covers, originals, and a throwback surprise. Highlights include the glistening groove in the opening title track, wherein Perry offers the set's statement of purpose — in some way, virtually each of these ten tracks zones in on what it takes to become a better man — in spirit, in thought, in relationships, etc. The Curtis Mayfield nugget "I'm So Proud" features the lyrical saxophone of Kim Waters, and is one of numerous tracks on which guitarist Rohn Lawrence shines: he adds elegant fills, colorful chord voicings, and his signature rhythmic approach — check the way he plays under Waters' solo. As has been Perry's wont on earlier recordings, he takes on a true soul classic in Mayfield's Impressions hit "Gypsy Woman." Despite the iconic weight the tune is imbued with, Perry's read — with wonderful help from Lawrence — adds rather than detracts. Perry's vocal here is silky but finds its way right into the seam of the lyric and exposes the finer points in the songwriter's poetic use of metaphor. Slightly funkier and ripe for sophisticated clubbers is "Feelin' You," with lithe trumpet lines by Rick Braun. Just before the close, Perry delivers a stellar — and thoroughly revisioned — take on "Dreaming's Out of Season," which he first recorded with the Montclairs. The innovative vocal chart reveals why some songs are eternal. Reinforcing the album's theme is the closer "Stand Up," a killer duet with Howard Hewett that nods back at classic, '70s-era Marvin Gaye. Perry ups his game on A Better Man, choosing to rely on real lyric substance as well as an abundant vocal style. He hasn't left the loverman behind, he's just added more dimension and character to his profile.

Matt Belsante performs like a seasoned entertainer well beyond his years. An old soul with a distinctly modern sound, you can hear the respect and appreciation for the material in his smooth as silk voice.
Maybe it was the old Sinatra records that he used to listen to with his Grandfather. Or maybe it was the steady diet of Coltrane, Ellington, Basie and Fitzgerald that he was fed at home. Whatever it was, Matt knew it was in his bones, a part of his DNA that would ultimately lead this young artist to pursue a dream of his own.
Just out of grade school, Matt picked up the tenor sax at the age of twelve and became a standard fixture in his middle school and high school jazz bands. But the sax wasn't his only instrument: he soon found he had a talent for using his voice. By his senior year of High School, Matt had won the prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in both the vocal and instrumental categories, the first student from his school to achieve such a feat.
That affirmation was a turning point for Matt, as he realized that his true passion was for using his voice to interpret a song. He grabbed a guitar, taught himself to play and began composing his own music the summer before he entered Nashville's Vanderbilt University. Before the first day of class commenced, the late Vanderbilt/Blair school of Music director, Billy Adair, had already recruited Matt to sing for the Blair Big Band. Soon, Matt was directing himself, leading the Dodecaphonics, an all-male a cappella group on campus.
The rising star eventually came to the attention of Nashville's well-heeled music industry following a performance of the Nashville Jazz Orchestra. That night, the NJO performed a Sinatra tribute, and Matt sang many as if he was channeling Sinatra himself. That performance landed him a televised appearance as a featured entertainer for the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant 2006, which eventually lead him to Green Hill Music, where he recorded an album of Christmas classic (White Christmas), and followed that with a spectacular non-seasonal collection of standards (Blame It On My Youth). The titles quickly became two of the label's top selling releases.
CBL Properties and KMT Creative Group tapped Matt to become both the voice and the face of the campaign. As a result, Matt was featured in a series of spots on television, radio and internet.
Matt's latest collaboration with Green Hill, teams him with GRAMMY nominated producer, Jack Jezzro, acclaimed arranger and orchestrator, Jeff Steinberg and the exciting new jazz pianist, Mason Embry. A collection of traditional jazz and Big Band standards, as well a couple of pop and R&B classics, WHEN YOU RE SMILING boasts Matt's best vocal work to date.
