"There is a new engine soon to be released to replace the current 4.1.60 . It has been in public (beta) testing for a few months (and a lot longer internally before that).
It is scheduled to be available Monday, 24 February 2003. If you want to use it then, you will need to manually download the Engine only file. We will provide you handy links when it is available.
or
You can choose to wait a few weeks until Wednesday, 26 March 2003. After that time the normal update procedures (like 7.x Instant Update and SDAT files) will include the new engine.
I would recommend doing the engine early, only if you want to help with testing before it becomes more widely available in March or if you are having problems that might be fixed in the newer engine. "
2 standard warnings. The release dates are subject to change.
New releases of software can cause problems because, McAfee can't test with every possible combination of O/S and other software
(so waiting a week or 2 may be a good idea)
New Features of engine 4.2.40 Additional virus detection and cleaning capabilities

Цитата: The 4240 scan engine will be released soon. This will be a two-phase release, as follows:
24 February 2003 - release of a 4240 Engine Only SuperDAT package.
26 March 2003 - release of the first combined DAT and Engine SuperDAT package with the new 4240 Engine
Remember that anti-virus is only as good as its last update!
We recognise that many companies have a standard for their corporate acceptance testing, and we are supporting that by releasing the Engine Only SuperDAT package a month before deploying the new 4240 Engine through the weekly SuperDAT. This will allow you to perform any in house acceptance testing before rollout. If you do not have a corporate acceptance criteria, then to give your users the best AV protection, you should deploy the Engine Only SuperDAT when posted. Further during this month we recommend that users review their anti-virus update strategy.
We note that there are a significant number of customers not making use of the xDAT package, which is available from the NAI website and only requires 42% of the bandwidth of a full Engine and DAT SuperDAT to deploy. The xDAT only contains the latest DATs, so you must ensure that either a full SuperDAT or the Engine Only SuperDAT is deployed to machines with out of date Engines. We will endeavour to maintain full AV detection and cleaning through the 4160 end of life period, but as such we advise moving to the 4240 Engine as soon as is prudent.
More than 200 viruses appear every month and if you're not up-to-date, you are vulnerable to any one of them which gets a foothold in the field.
McAfee releases regular DAT files, ensuring that full protection is added to all McAfee products. The DAT files contain the information required to detect and remove viruses - what to look for and where to look for it.
However, increasing numbers is only part of the story. The nature of the threat changes over time. New types of threat appear, new file-types become vulnerable, applications and operating systems are updated. To take account of this, McAfee regularly updates its scan Engine. The Engine understands all the different structures in which a virus could lurk - whether it be EXE files, or MS Office files or compressed and archived files.
Make sure that you benefit from the latest McAfee scanning technology!
