Tutorial for Serv-u ( without router )
1) Creating a host
You got to know if you have a static or dynamic ip ( a dynamic ip changes every 24 hours, every 2 days... ) Check your documentation of you isp for the sort ip you've got.
When you have a static ip you can directly go to point 2. For the people who have a dynamic ip go to no-ip.com. Register there ( it is free ). You will create a host that updates your ip automatticcely, it's almost so good as haveing a static ip!! Login, and click on add. The form will appear.
Fill in a hostname ( for example johndoe.no-ip.info ) Click DNS host ( A ) on. In the box " ip adress" you fill in your default gateaway ( finding default gateway : start>run>command>ipconfig ) and click create host.
The next thing you do is download the duc sofware... click on the link dun-update client and download it, install it... it will update your ip automaticcely!
2) Setting up Serv-u
2.1 ) The beggining
Serv-U can be downloaded form serv-u.com
2.2 ) Setting up
At the end of the Serv-U installation a box will appear with "Start Serv-U Administrator program" checked, just leave the check mark in that box, it will bring you to the first screen of setup.
1. Click next on the first dialog box
2. It then asks if you want to enable small images for the menu this is up to you. Click next
3. Click next again
4. Your IP address, leave the IP address blank. Click next
5. Domain name, here you can put anything that you would like to call your site. It is completely up to you. After you chose the name. Click next.
6. Anonymous account, it asks if you would like to allow anonymous access. If you choose yes, you will not have to worry about user name and password as anyone will have access to your FTP. But I would strongly recommend choosing no, that way you will be able to specify who has access to your site by creating user accounts and what the restrictions on those users are. Check no and click next.
7. Named account, leave the check in yes. Click next
8. Account name, chose a login name this will be use by the people trying to access your site. I highly recommend a single word without capital letter, like "test" or “leech”. This is primarily to avoid any confusion over how to log into your FTP. After entering the name click next.
9. Account password, this is the password the user will have to enter when accessing your site. To make it easier for the user I recommend using the same as the user name. In my example I use "test". Click next.
10. Home directory, now chose a directory that the user will see when accessing your site. I suggest making a directory especially for that use like "C:\ftpserver. Click next.
11. Lock in home directory, this is completely up to you but I suggest you chose to lock the user in the home directory (by putting the dot in yes). This just means that the user, once into your FTP cannot wander around the inner workings of your PC. Click next.
12. Admin privilege, I recommend leaving it as "no privilege" for this test run. Click next.
13. You are almost done but there are a few details that I would suggest changing. Open "Serv-U Servers" by clicking the + (if not already done) then open "<< Local Server >>" then "Domains" then "this is the name you choose in step 5" then "User" then "the name you choose in step 8" you will see that on the right there is a new panel. You should go to "Dir Access" by clicking the appropriated tab. You will see the folder that you previously choose in step 10, I highly recommend that you click that folder and remove all the check mark in Write, Append, Delete, Create, Remove and Inherit. The following pictures should illustrate how it should look. The column of unchecked boxes is on the right.
This is done because there are certain thing you do not want your user to be able to do, delete things from your hard drive for example. Once you are more experienced with your FTP you will be able to start changing these depending on your needs.
Organisation:
14. Downloads: Creating a download folder is often a very good idea because once you start getting the traffic you will need a place to put all your acquisitions before they are sorted out. You should create that folder in the folder previously created in step 10, I suggest calling it "ftpdownload", so is path should be "C:\ftpserver\ftpdownloard". Now click add and choose that folder. You should change the proprieties of that folder to "Read", "List" and "Inherit". See picture
15. Uploads: Now created an upload folder. You should create that folder in the folder previously created in step 10 I suggest calling it "ftpupload", so is path should be "C:\ftpserver\ftpupload". Now click add and choose that folder. You should change the proprieties of that folder to "Read", "Write", "List", "Create" and "Inherit". See picture.
Now you have setted up your FTP. You're ready to share files with other people. But before you can use your FTP, you must check if your firewall allows transfer to the port you defined in the window general. How to do this depend on whath firewall you have.
