at Madison Square Garden Pre-Fight Press Conference
Wednesday, April 26, 2000
HOWARD SIROTA: Who did you beat to be the number-three contender?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Thirty-three fighters. I beat 33 fighters.
HOWARD SIROTA: Were you knocked out in one fight?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Myself?
HOWARD SIROTA: Now is that your brother?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Huh?
HOWARD SIROTA: Did you lose one fight?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Yeah, I lose one fight.
HOWARD SIROTA: And that was to who? [TRANSLATION IN GERMAN]
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: To Ross Puritty, two years... one-and-a-half years ago. And this fight, and made me so strong. I lost, but I win. I win mentally. It's been so good for me. It's been bad for my sports career, that I lost one fight. But, it's good for my bigger, the big sport career.
HOWARD SIROTA: If you've never beaten a top-ten heavyweight, how did you get to be the number-three contender?
[TRANSLATION IN GERMAN]
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Okay. Everybody in [inaudible], at least. You don't have... It's worked from the sportsman, and worked from the promoter. Together worked. [inaudible] Today, today for example, say Mike Tyson is the world champion, for example. Then if he lost, coming up [pointing down, meaning "going down"]. After six months he stay number 15, maybe. And he's no more in top ten. It's no… See it's only a number.
HOWARD SIROTA: Who do you want to fight next?
[TRANSLATION IN GERMAN]
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Next, I want to have a fight with David Bastice, Saturday. [Laughs]
HOWARD SIROTA: And after that?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Yeah, after that, I hope I have a world championship fight.
HOWARD SIROTA: Will you fight anyone who has--
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Okay, Lennox Lewis. Lewis when he wins, if he wins against Michael Grant..Maybe those big names are interesting to fight.
HOWARD SIROTA: What does your brother tell you about his last fight?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: We talked long about the fight. We talked many times about the fight.
HOWARD SIROTA: What happened?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: The shoulder. The shoulder. Ripped up. The muscle in his shoulder is ripped up. And, you know, in the heavyweight division, just one punch can make the fight. He don't can move the left hand. He's in so strong pain, he couldn't feel. No continuation of the fight. And when he said. "I can't move my left hand. I can't move my left hand," who believed him? It's a loss and that's all. His career is not at an end. He's smart guy. He's a doctor. And, he come back. He don't lost the fight; he make a gift to Chris Byrd. And gift is world title, world championship belt.
HOWARD SIROTA: Who is your promoter?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Klaus Peter Kohl is my promoter.
HOWARD SIROTA: And your brother, the same?
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Yes.
HOWARD SIROTA: Would you ever fight each other?
[TRANSLATION IN GERMAN]
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: Good question. You know. We love our mother so much that, we no can fight with each other.
HOWARD SIROTA: Thank you very, very much.
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: You're welcome.
HOWARD SIROTA: Nice to meet you.
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO: I hope you understand me.
HOWARD SIROTA: I do. I do.
