Elvis Costello - Rock And Roll Music (2007)



Судя по написанному на обложке, это один из сборников из задуманной серии, которая должна показать разные стороны творчества Элвиса Костело. И вроде как отбор песен в эти сборники самим Костело проконтролирован. Название, правда, не вполне корректно: типичного рок-н-ролла там только две песни, и те в концертной записи; похоже, пришло как-то Элвису настроение их именно в этом стиле исполнить. Подавляющую часть всего остального назвать рок-н-роллом можно лишь с большой натяжкой. Но диск хороший. К нему еще прилагается буклетик на 24 стр. с фотографиями, текстами песен и прочей информацией. Поскольку в результате общий oбъем сканов получился довольно внушительный - около 30 МБ, я вместе с альбомом положил только сканы обложки, а буклетик выложил отдельно: вдруг кому-то он не нужен, ворчать будет из-за лишнего траффика.

Германская "техно"-группа "Masterboy" была создана двумя друзьями-композиторами Tommy Schleh и Enrico Zabler, которые решили работать вместе после своей встречи в 1989 году в немецком городе Баден-Вёртемберге. Первым их синглом стал "Dance To The Beat" (1990), который продержался в различных чартах в течение 16-ти недель, затем последовал не менее удачный хит "Shake Up And Dance". Спустя год выходит третий сингл "I Need Your Love" и дебютный альбом "The Masterboy Family", после которых Tommy Schleh и Enrico Zabler на два года погружаются в творческие поиски.

По-видимому, их поиски были удачными, ибо в 1993 году выходит их второй альбом "Feeling Alright", заглавная композиция с которого "Fall In Trance" немедленно занимает высшую позицию в танцевальных чартах Франции, Британии, Австрии, Италии и, конечно же, Германии. А вокалисткой другого их сингла "Everybody Needs Somebody" была очаровательная Trixy Delgado, присоединившаяся к "Masterboy". Этот сингл был №41 в Германии, вошёл в TOP10 во Франции и Бразилии, в TOP20 - в Швеции, Израиле, Канаде, Австрии и Швейцарии и в TOP30 ещё в одиннадцати странах. В сентябре 1993 выходит также их знаменитый сингл "I Got To Give It Up", несколько месяцев продержавшийся в чартах, а в июле 1994 - супер-хит "Feel The Heat Of The Night", который был №8 в Германии и за два месяца стал золотым, а во Франции был №2 и шесть недель висел в TOP10. Тогда же выходит и новый альбом "Masterboy" - "Different Dreams", который был №13 в Германии и продержался в TOP20 несколько недель.

В октябре 1994 "Masterboy" отправляются в тур по Германии. Их очередной сингл "Is This The Love" также попадает в TOP20. В этот момент во Франции начинается самая настоящая истерия по поводу "Masterboy". В марте 1995 их альбом "Different Dreams" занимает во французских хит-парадах седьмую строчку и становится золотым! "Masterboy" становятся самой успешной иностранной группой 90-х во Франции.

Тем временем турне группы продолжается, "Masterboy" посещают Бразилию, и их песни четыре недели занимают №1 в бразильских чартах, а по радио их передают по 20 раз в сутки. Успех имеет также новый сингл "Generation Of Love" (1995), который №16 в Германии, №18 во Франции и в TOP20 в Австрии, Швеции, Швейцарии и Бельгии.

В январе 1996 хит "Land Of Dreaming" становится №12 в США. В этот момент вокалистка Trixy Delgado решает уйти из группы, и на её место приходит американская певица Linda Rocco, которая дебютирует в песне "Mister Feeling". В сентябре "Masterboy" участвуют в германском Mega Dance Festivalе, в течение которого посещают 18 крупных городов, и везде их встречают тысячи поклонников. Их сингл "Show Me Colours" с нового альбома "Colours" приносит им новый успех в чартах. В январе 1997 года "Masterboy" были названы самой успешной германской группой 1996 года, и им был вручён приз Chartbreaker Prize'96.

Группа "Masterboy" распалась в сентябре 1997 года...

What started as a project to reunite Coryell with Billy Cobham on drums in order to take a second look at the sound and style of the Coryell's Spaces ended up creating a whole new chapter instead. With Richard Bona on bass and Bireli Lagrene on guitar, these nine songs capture the spirit of that 30-year-old session with new, adventuresome playing and vigor. Coryell takes great pride in the spontaneity of this project -- one day rehearsal, two days recording -- and well he should, since it contains musicians interacting with each other in a loose yet totally on-top-of-their-game manner. Bireli shines on the 9/8 section "Variations on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," while Bona solos beautifully on "Blues for Django and Stephane." Yet it's ultimately Coryell's and Cobham's show, and their playing throughout is sublime with the on-the-spot recording of "Hong Kong Breeze" -- an off the cuff head arrangement done in one take -- showcasing their two players/one mind interplay. Anyone who knows anything about Victor Wooten knows that he's one of those rare souls: he gains a rep for playing the bass. Soul Circus, however, isn't just an extravaganza for bass players. Wooten, as it turns out, is also a heck of a writer and, as the listener will learn on the first track, a fine singer. The unusual first track, "Victa," is a funky, soulful hymn in praise of -- who else -- Wooten himself, while "Bass Tribute" offers accolades to those who've come before him. If the subject matter sounds a bit strange, the confident delivery, understated humor, and fine songwriting make it all work. Soul Circus' production is a nice merger of keyboards, drums, lots of bass, and multiple voices. While this combination and Wooten's production does provide a blueprint sound for the album, it's never predictable. "Back to India," for example, combines soul and sitar for an unusual but winning mixture. There are other oddities like "Cell Phone," complete with dialer effects, spiritually tinged material like "Prayer" and "Back to India," and songs about the power of love such as "Can't Hide Love." Overall, Soul Circus has the adventurous, confident feel of an old Sly Stone album while still being completely of its time. Mr. Collipark explains it all in the "Intro." The first half of Chemically Imbalanced is for the longtime Ying Yang Twins fans and goes for that strip club thump. The second half "makes it a little musical for y'all" with the help of Wyclef and Jerry "Wonda" Duplessis, the duo who brought you the Shakira hit "Hips Don't Lie." In other words, this is effectively two EPs stuck together, an album that takes a massive turn in the middle, and a release that tries to please everyone, including the Ying Yangs themselves. Listening to a track as rich and Sly Stone-flavored as "Family," it's easy to hear that the Twins are anxious to explore new avenues, but they're just as enthusiastic when delivering the first half's stream of club tracks, of which the infectious "Jigglin" is the best, although "1st Booty on Duty" deserves special mention for title alone. The tricky beat on "Leave" and sexy single "Dangerous" are also noteworthy, and if it sounds like the second half of the album is the winner, it's not, since its tracks would make more sense on a real, flowing full-length, as the half-and-half format actually serves the simple, party-minded first half better. Making this frustrating release even more so is the "One Mo for the Road" skit, which infers the two are in for an extended break and all this growth won't be panning out anytime soon. To their credit, no one could have mixed these two sides of the Ying Yangs in a sensible way — at least not with this selection — and the only way the "Intro" could have warned the listener any better is if it had been titled "Warning." While Chemically Imbalanced can't decide if it's a home for the Wyclef singles, a haven for the experiments, or a plain old "return to form," the highlights are worth hearing and justify this scattershot placeholder's existence. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Since his late teens, Kenny Garrett has lived the kind of life most musicians only fantasize about. He's been a sideman for legends like Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Emerging in the mid-'80s as one of contemporary jazz's most exciting and eclectic new solo artists, the saxophonist's albums have earned him worldwide recognition, four-star reviews, and top spots on reader polls and Rolling Stone's "hot list." Known for years primarily for his adventurous playing and sparkling improvisations, Garrett finally came into his own as a composer with his 1997 Grammy-nominated Warner Bros. release Songbook -- his first album comprised entirely of his own compositions. The concept behind Simply Said, Garrett's latest Warner Jazz release, must have been to further reflect his growth as a songwriter, keeping memorable melodies as the focus while exploring -- as the stylistically diverse performer has always done -- new exotic, rhythmic possibilities within the jazz framework. While Garrett has been very successful in the past covering the classics of influential artists (as he did on his previous Warners projects, 1993's Black Hope, 1995's Triology, and 1996's Pursuance: Music of John Coltrane), his growth as a songwriter has unleashed a desire to journey beyond what people might expect based on past projects. While Garrett kept his playing simple on lush, hypnotic ballads like "Can I Just Hold Your Hand?," "Sounds Like Winter," and "Words Can't Express," he and his core unit of gospel pianist/organist Shedrick Mitchell, acoustic bassist Nat Reeves, and drummer Chris Dave can't help but stir up the fires of the unexpected throughout the rest of the collection. Playful titles like "Organized Colors" (a nearly ten-minute piece incorporating a multitude of shades from silky and seductive to swinging and percussive), "Delta Bali Blues," "G.T.D.S" (aka "Give the Drummer Some"), and the whimsical piano, sax, and percussion jam "Charlie Brown Goes to South Africa" reflect the spirit Garrett was after here. Victor Wooten makes it clear in the first few seconds of Palmystery that he's the man in charge. His spellbinding, acrobatic basslines take the lead, literally, and even when he's fulfilling the traditional role of the bassist (not that there's much about his virtuosic playing that's traditional) and shining the spotlight on his collaborators, he remains the focal point. Yet Wooten, the veteran bassist of Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, is no showoff. Through mostly original compositions (the sole cover is Horace Silver's "Song for My Father") that glide easily between jazz fusion, world music, R&B, gospel, rock, and funk, through instrumental and vocal sections, improvisations and structured pieces, Wooten holds it all together -- it's nearly impossible not to listen to what he's doing with his instrument. Still, although the musicianship is never less than stellar throughout and always takes a front seat, this is not an indulgent record -- Wooten and his crew serve the songs, not vice versa, and they do so with panache. The leadoff track, "2 Timers," serves notice that this is going to be a fun listen, not a difficult one, despite the complexity often inherent: with one drummer playing in 3/4 time and the other in 4/4 (hence the title), Wooten alternately hands the reins over to violinist Eric Silver, a three-man horn section, harmonica ace Howard Levy, and brother Joseph Wooten on keyboards. Continual shifts of tempo, mood, and texture keep things lively and then, just in case it seems like this is how it might stay, the second track, the Arabian-flavored "Cambo," puts an entirely different spin on things. With lead and choired vocals by co-writer Amir Ali and Saundra Williams, Wooten lays down a solid rhythm over which brothers Joseph and guitarist Regi Wooten work out, along with Ali on violin, lute, and darbouka (an African hand drum). Each successive track expands the album's colorings: on "I Saw God," which features Richard Bona among its vocalists, Victor Wooten offers a non-religious person's impressions of his confrontation with a unisexual, philosophical, word-playing deity, while the flamenco-esque "The Lesson" pares down the cast to just Victor on bass and another Flecktone brother, Roy Wooten, supplying percussion. And so on throughout: "The Gospel" doubles up Wooten's fretted and fretless basses with ghostly vocals from the Woodard Family and a team of horns, and the Silver interpretation is spirited and swinging, with Karl Denson's tenor saxophone among the more notable solos on the record. "Us 2," the closing track, is also the quietest, Wooten laying low on basses and drum programming while Keb' Mo' peels off sleek slide guitar licks and Joseph Wooten lays down a bed of keyboards. "Sifu" utilizes Mike Stern's guitar. "Miss U," which features the Lee Boys on vocals, Roosevelt "The Doctor" Collier on pedal steel, and Alvin Lee (presumably not the Ten Years After guitarist) on guitar, is a gospelized, bluesy, soul-fried rave-up that gives Wooten a chance to show off his boogie power. Bob James' most enduring recording is perhaps one of his least adventurous. Full of simple laid-back melodies, light, airy grooves, and quiet backdrops, it's a smooth jazz "masterpiece." This was Bob's first release for CBS when he moved there and began his Tappan Zee label. Bob says now, "In retrospect, this was a big, big step to leave the intimacy of the Creed Taylor and Rudy Van Gelder creative environment. But at the time, I just thought of it as a natural part of my musical progression. CBS was very welcoming, it was a privilege to work with and be supported by Bruce Lundvall, president at the time." Unusual for Bob in that there are more tunes written by other artists, Boz Scaggs, Billy Preston and Peter Frampton, than any other album he's ever recorded but rest assured that Bob put his unique arranging talents to work to make each and every tune a Bob James track. In a rap world set predominately on a limited range of topics to cover, politically and socially charged hip-hop is a breath of pure, fresh air. For the past decade, Spearhead and Michael Franti have been the antiseptic to a plaque-filled gold-toothed hip-hop mouth, expelling righteous truths and music with extremely thoughtful, meticulous details. Everyone Deserves Music continues with the tradition, but takes the sound of Spearhead into more of a disco-funk territory at times. This doesn't displace Franti's lyrics by any means, but gives him an extremely fresh perspective to stretch out and experiment with his delivery. Not so much a punch to the stomach like their previous releases, Franti and Spearhead almost made a deliberate attempt to stray from the typical hip-hop beats and go for something a bit more organic and acoustic than their previous efforts -- and the experiments more than pay off. It's honest, compelling, emotional, and soulful, and it's unfortunate that these values don't equate with much in the commercial hip-hop market anymore.
