A bit of a rebound: Parliament's "Flatman And Bobin" (redone for 1997's T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M.) is a pleasant excuse for the Horny Horns to blow. The Brides redo the early Parliaments tune "Ice Melting In Your Heart" (Clinton revived the song again for the early 90s Otis Day project, which I really should review someday), and sing "Up Up And Away," plus add backing vocals to Dr. Funkenstein's "Rat Kissed The Cat." Clinton, Diane Brooks and Funkadelic cover Brenda Holloway's "Every Little Bit Hurts." But the disc is far from great: Funkadelic is represented by "Too Tight For Light" by Junie Morrison, a synth mess that sounds like a demo, but with Junie you can never be sure. Perhaps by coincidence, most of the artists here are singing their own compositions: Cleaves wrote the bossa nova "Eyes Of A Dreamer," Phillippe Wynne wrote the sluggish "I Found You," Ron Ford wrote "Thumparella (Oh Kay)," Bernie wrote the disappointing love song "Who Do You Love," Junie wrote "Can't Get Over Losing You," Tracey Lewis wrote "Clone Ranger," and even unknown Lonnie Greene wrote the amusing funk-rocker "I Didn't Know That Funk Was Loaded (Count Funkula)." Cameo's second album, We All Know Who We Are, is uneven, but it has its moments, both in the quiet storm field ("Why Have I Lost You") and the disco-funk category (The near-instrumental, Brass Construction-like groove "It's Serious" went to #21 on the R&B charts.). After years of being overshadowed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh left the Wailers to pursue a solo career. Released in 1976, Legalize It is a bold statement that Peter Tosh had arrived and was a creative force in his own right. Although he explores some issues of spirituality, this is Tosh's most lightweight album in the sense that it is his least political. This is not meant as a criticism -- in fact, Tosh's playfulness and joy ("Ketchy Shuby") only add to the album's charm. He does make political statements (the title track celebrates and promotes the use of marijuana), but they are done with a sense of humor and a melodic infectiousness that belie his sincere concern for the issues. Tosh incorporates many instruments and mixes slower ballads with upbeat grooving tunes. The album's highlight is "Why Must I Cry," a multi-layered song (co-written with Bob Marley) that conveys a sense of personal failure when fighting an uphill battle, whether it be against injustices of the world or within the confines of a relationship. With 1986's Strong Persuader, guitarist and vocalist Robert Cray stepped to the front of the line as a smooth and intelligent practitioner of the blues genre. Strong Persuader almost worked as well as a greatest hits set, with the brilliant Willie Mitchell-influenced "I Guess I Showed Her" being best of a perfect ten. With that standard being set, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is marred by it's lack of potent material and a tired-sounding band and Cray. The title is a steamy track punctuated by the Memphis Horns. The edgy and methodical "Don't You Even Care" finds Cray again on the losing end of a relationship. Although the relationship blues are stinging here, this album's best effort strays far from the formula. The oddly humorous "Night Patrol" has Cray playing armchair therapist wondering what went wrong with a drunk, and a 17-year-old girl on the corner. By song's end he can also wonder about himself, as he too hits the streets a potentially dangerous wandering psycho. For the most part Don't Be Afraid of the Dark has the sly work Cray is famous for. The sprite "Gotta Change Rules" the country/Memphis sound influenced has Cray doing some strong vocalizations and taut guitar riffs. "At Last" and "Laugh Out Loud," while not horrible, do come off like uninspired filler. This is one of those albums that might not be exciting at first, but if it is listened to intently some of the songs do become worthwhile. ~ Jason Elias, All Music Guide

Though pianist and singer Tânia Maria's Intimidade was originally released in the fall of 2005, it didn't become domestically available in the U.S. until the next year when Blue Note issued it, which is a good thing for American fans of Brazilian jazz, or jazz, or just good music in general. Because Intimidade is a great album, rich and full while not sounding ornate. It's an intimate affair (hence the title, perhaps), Maria with her bassist (bassists actually, as there are three that play on the album, including the great Eddie Gómez, with whom she has a conversation -- both musical and verbal -- on "E' Tão Gostoso Seu Moco") and percussionists working together to create sophisticated, sensual, warm music that comes out of the speakers and into the room like something tangible, something with substance and actual measurable qualities like viscosity and weight. Maria's voice (the word "sultry" is often used to describe it, and is an appropriate choice) is clearly the star of the record, her scat-and-piano solos acting as a bridge between the vocals and the instrumentation (which is just as strong) behind it; she's comfortable moving between elements of funk and pop within her normal jazz and samba routine. Her version of "Besame Mucho" is fantastic, seductive, and nicely syncopated, with a piano solo that echoes lines of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." In fact, Maria is more than willing to reference her American influences, from Sarah Vaughan to Ray Charles to Burt Bacharach as she goes through original pieces as well as some great Latin classics ("Agua de Beber," "Evocaçao"), which work quite well, showing off her versatility without sacrificing any of the passion or great rhythms. Once upon a time (circa 1998), the daughter of a blues legend burst onto the scene with her own potentially legendary debut, Turn the Heat Up. I say "potentially" because, although all the necessary ingredients were there, they didn't quite represent the best of what Shemekia Copeland is obviously capable of. A few more years to hone her voice and allow it to reach its natural maturity, and Copeland could produce an album that would challenge some of the reigning royalty of the blues. Wicked is not that album. It is, however, a stunningly good piece of work, with solid songs (Copeland's contributing more to the songwriting, too), a greater variety of styles, and some serious genre-bending that will turn the heads of those used to the more straight-ahead blues of Copeland's last effort. The album even opens with a rocker, "It's 2 a.m.," and Copeland pokes fun at all those pseudo-R&B true-love ballads littering the airwaves lately with her own "The Fool You're Looking For." The fact that Wicked still represents more potential than realization is actually quite refreshing, too. If Ice Cube's debut was a shocking attack that proved the N.W.A legacy would be stronger divided, his sophomore effort was a new kind of superstar pulling off the miraculous, a follow-up that equals its classic predecessor and tops it in some people's books. With a million copies of Death Certificate preordered, Cube was no longer the rock critics' darling. A million people listening was dangerous, especially since he was now slithering his influence into the suburbs. If the black rage didn't get you, the misogyny of "I'm gonna do my thing, with your daughter" probably would. Here, one of rap's greatest storytellers is able to draw hatred in under a minute with the short and direct "Black Korea," an angry protest song concerning Korean grocers that got him dubbed "racist" and "Ice KKKube" by some. The track is an extreme representation of how a much sharper and cutting this album is when compared with his debut, and even though the intro announces the full-length is divided into a "Death Side" and "Life Side," both are equally bleak. With the CD format, the two sides are indistinguishable and run over the listener with fast tales of drug dealing, drive-by shootings, and women who go from "Ms. Thing to Ms. Gonorrhea." This would be numbing if it weren't for the rapper's amazing lyrics, ground-shaking delivery, and insight like when "A Bird in the Hand" deals with the irony of selling crap to buy diapers ("Gotta serve you food that might give you cancer/Cuz my son doesn't take no for answer"). A bit of sweet relief comes with the brightness of the great single "Steady Mobbin'" and with the nostalgia and slow tempo of "Doing Dumb Shit." "True to the Game" ("Ain't that a bitch/They hate to see a young nigga rich") is arguably the quintessential Cube track and if all this weren't enough already, the N.W.A diss "No Vaseline" hangs off the album like a crowd-pleasing, Brick-sampling encore. Although next year's Predator would be a bigger hit, Death Certificate brings to a close the man's trilogy of perfect albums that began with N.W.A's Compton and explodes into a supernova right here.
